This is where it all started for Fat Boy. I was on Vacation staying at a resort that offered free scuba lessons (scuba had never entered my mind up to this point). I took a one hour lesson then talked the instructor into taking us on a beach dive. By a twist of fate here I am seven years later back where it all began. I booked all of our boat dives through Maui Diving. The owners name is John and he will talk your head off but he knows Maui diving. He will tell you where to beach dive and where to stay away from. You can rent all of the gear you need including a air fill card that is good for seven days and ten tanks for thirty five dollars. If you go on one of the boat dives all gear is furnished as well as lunch and fruit through out the dive. We stayed at the Kapalua Bay Resort and found some great diving right off our own beach. There was a rainbow every morning that reached from Lania to Maui.

The first boat dive that we went on was with the Maui Diamond II. This is a very nice boat that caters to certified divers as well as first time divers. When you get on the boat the instructor and dive master will talk with you and split up the divers so you will all enjoy your dive. Our first stop was Molokini. The day we went we were the only certified divers on board so the dive master planned a multilevel dive to the back side of the crater. We descended to 85'and The first thing that I noticed was the sound of the whales. The recorded noise you hear can not do them justice, they sound amazing. I just wanted to stop and listen but our dive master reminded me that we were burning air and had a lot to see so we moved on with the whales providing the music to our dive.

The depth below us dropped off to the abyss, deep blue as far as you could see. We saw fish that I still do not have all the names for, bombs that had been there since World War II and currents like I have never seen. We ascended to 40' and completed the rest of our dive with me straining my eyes all the while trying to see the source of our music. This was a great learning experience and is not for the beginner but, if you are a advanced diver you will want to dive the back side of Molokini.

We boarded the boat and shared our experience with the couple that had just completed their first dive ever. I ask did they hear the whales, they had not. I did not even try to describe how they sound, if you have heard them under water you know why.

Our next stop was a site called five graves, you can dive this as a shore dive and I highly recommend it. There are caves here but do not enter them unless you have special training. There is a turtle cleaning station and you will see big turtles. The visibility is 100' with very little current. This is a very safe dive for the beginner diver and with any luck you may see the resident white tipped shark that lives in one of the caves. This was a fun dive and I was a little sad that it had come to a end.
